Physician Credentialing Is Vital to Hospital Operations

Physician credentialing is often one of the more onerous duties in hospital administration, but it is vital to the institutions operations and business. The physician credentialing process ensures that health care providers are certified to provide the services required by the hospital. While some providers see it as a troublesome paperwork exercise, it is, in fact, insurance on the hospitals part that those who are employed in patient care have proven that the utmost standards of care will be practiced on a daily basis.

Keeping records is not glamorous work but it is essential. Attention to detail and making sure that all the paperwork is in order and up to date means that physician credentialing professionals need to stay on top of timelines and deadlines and be cognizant of the requirements of various medical specialties. Continuing education units need to be tracked and filed, board certifications need to be verified, and physicians, who are often focused on treating patients, need to be reminded when requirements are due.

Beyond making certain that physician credentials are updated with state agencies and governing bodies, physician credentialing staff ensure that physicians are credentialed with insurers and other third party payers. The Medicare and Medicaid programs require applications to be filed and updated before physicians can treat these beneficiaries for reimbursement. New physicians looking for employment need to be checked against a CMSs Disqualified Provider List to guarantee that they are allowed to be employed by the hospital. The penalties for allowing a disqualified provider to treat patients are severe and a hospital cannot afford to be negligent in this matter.

Besides federal and state health care programs, the private insurance market has its own requirements. Each insurance company has its own standards for participating in the plans it offers. Proof of education, experience, malpractice coverage, and legal history needs to be submitted to each commercial insurer according to their set standards and format. Physicians who are not enrolled in commercial insurance plans are considered out of that plans network and patients will receive reduced benefits or not be covered at all for received services. This is a drag on the hospitals revenue stream and can influence patients decisions on where they receive their care.

Physician credentialing is a multi-faceted process that entails maintaining and updating documentation regarding a physicians current qualifications. It is not something that can be neglected. It needs to be performed by trained professionals who understand the process and its value not only to each individual health care provider to the larger institution as a whole.

Hand Sanitizer Dispensers For Hospitals

One of the most common places to see hand sanitizer dispensers are in hospitals and medical facilities. Doctors, nurses and patients alike benefit from its use. The need to fight germs and prevent illness from spreading is profound in areas like hospitals and medical facilities.

According to the Center for Disease Control, 80% of infections are spread by hand. This is because most people often touch areas of their body that can spread the infections such as their eyes, noses and mouths. Therefore the use of sanitizer can prevent illness from spreading. It should have 60% to 95% alcohol. The Center for Disease Control states that the alcohol deactivates the bacteria on hands and reduces viruses as well.

Sanitizing does not lead to resistance to antibiotics so it can be used frequently, although it should not replace regular washing of the hands. Hand sanitizer dispensers which were originally found in hospitals and medical facilities are being found more often in many other types of public places and institutions such as schools, offices, stores, restaurants and more.

It should not be used however, when hands come in contact with blood, fecal matter or dirt. It is best to thoroughly wash your hands should you come in contact with any of these. It is also best to use after washing your hands. Alcohol based sanitizer kills a range of bacteria, including (MRSA) methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, which is a flesh eating bacteria. Someone who uses sanitizer has a slower rate of bacteria redevelopment as well.

A lot of hospitals have guidelines for sanitizing, such as doctors and nurses being required to sanitize in between patients and to wash between every couple of uses of sanitizer. Also, whenever a hospital employee comes in contact with someone’s bodily fluids they are often required to wash and then sanitize as opposed to just sanitizing. People should use one dime sized drop and rub their hands together for roughly half of a minute for it to be effective. If you can’t continue scrubbing your hands together for half a minute, you likely did not use enough.

Children’s Hospitals Not Only Address the Medical Needs of Children but Also Make Them Feel Safe an

Children should never be considered as merely young adults according to health experts. The health care they should receive should be appropriate to their physical maturity, perception and communication, and the possible effects of certain treatments and long term care. Children continue to grow and they have not reached their full physical potential; this also means that their immune system is weaker compared to adults and they are much more vulnerable to diseases.

They require special patient care from pediatric specialty-trained doctors and nurses in children’s hospitals.

Doctors, nurses and other health care providers must receive specialized training in order to become qualified to provide care to children. Pediatricians usually take six years to become fully competent in pediatrics and children’s medicine. Registered Nurses join internship programs to receive the necessary education and training; this could last from a few months to a year. They may also choose to specialize in neonatal nursing which focuses on providing health care to premature babies and neonates (newborns up to 30 days) with medical complications.

Children are still growing and physicians must take this into account when recommending or performing surgeries and prescribing medicines. It is important that these won’t affect the normal growth of the child.

The structure and functions of the body of a child is different to an adult. They are relatively smaller; therefore, tools and equipments used should be appropriate for children’s use. One is example is the heart’s size, since children’s hearts are smaller, surgeons take more care on performing operations and use smaller, more delicate tools.

There are several illnesses that only affect children. There are also diseases that can be fatal to them but do not quite as much affect adults. One example is the Respiratory Syncitial Virus which can be life threatening to kids but would seem like a common cold to adults.

IV lines, needles, and respirators used in children’s hospitals are typically smaller versions of those used for adult patient care to suit the needs of the younger patients.

It is important that medical professionals have good communication and perception skills to better provide care to children. It is also encouraged for parents and families to take part in the treatment and recovery process. This way the children will feel more secure and comfortable.

Children’s hospitals are built and managed to child-friendly institutions to make the patients feel safe and at home. The environment is maintained to be colourful with Child Specialists around to aid and provide support to patients, parents and other health care providers.

When Should You Go to an Urgent Care Clinic

Urgent care clinics are specialized in walk-in emergency and non-emergency medical care. Here are four circumstances where an urgent care clinic is almost always the best health choice.

are becoming increasingly popular, and there’s a reason for that. But many people still aren’t sure what an urgent care clinic is or when they should go to one. Urgent care clinics are walk-in, short-wait clinics that are capable of handling emergencies and provide a full range of medical services. This makes them among the most flexible clinic options around, and there are certain times when they’re the best choice. So when should you go to an urgent care clinic? Here are four of the most common reasons:

1. In Emergencies. Many walk-in clinics are set up only to handle a short list of standard procedures, and cannot serious emergencies. But urgent care clinics are specifically structured to be able to handle emergencies just like a hospital ER does. They also tend to have less patient load, meaning more personalized attention and less pressure to discharge patients right away. If you have a medical emergency you can count on an urgent care clinic without having to call ahead.

2. When You Need to Save Money. Urgent care clinics generally accept all major insurance providers, and provide a host of services that might normally be spread between your physician, a specialist, and various labs. But insurance companies often allow urgent care clinic visits without a referral from your main physician, meaning you only have to make one copay – and attend one appointment – instead of two.

3. When You Don’t Have an Appointment. Probably the most attractive aspect of an urgent care clinic is the easy walk-in structure. Most of us don’t have the kind of schedule that allows us to take off from work at odd times to make a doctor’s appointment, and you don’t want to wait weeks to get a slot that’s convenient for you. Urgent care facilities are almost always walk-in friendly.

4. For No-Hassle Services. Whether you need to be screened for a disease, get your immunizations before travel or just come in for a physical, it shouldn’t be an ordeal. Urgent care clinics have a menu of quick in/out services that staff are used to handling quickly, efficiently and professionally every time.

These are just a few of the reasons to try an urgent care clinic. Have you been to one? What do you use these clinics for?

Hospital Mistakes, the Root Causes and the Cures

It has been nine years since the first news of the Institute of Medicine reporting that 100,000 people were being killed unnecessarily in hospitals each year. Moreover, it has been almost three years since Healthgrades, a private hospital rating service, reported that the annual death toll was 195,000. There was a flurry of rhetoric coming from hospital public relations people about patient safety programs, yet the statistics kept getting worse. What’s more, during the last three years,

Florida and several other states passed laws cutting lawyers’ contingency fees by more than half on all medical malpractice cases. The same states passed laws requiring full disclosure of medical mistakes. No one thought to require full disclosure of dangerous conditions that increases the risk of falling victim to negligence, like a shortage of nursing staff, or equipment in disrepair. Thus, in the final analysis, hospitalization keeps getting more and more risky and victims have more difficulty in finding a lawyer. The most astounding aspect of hospital mistakes is the commonality of them. We continue to see the same mishaps in different hospitals all over the world. Thus we must conclude that there is a major flaw in hospital design whereby that there are conditions that lend themselves to acts of negligence. The key word is “avoidable”. The hospital executives like to use the term “unfortunate but unavoidable” because it absolves the institution of liability. Therefore, in this series we shall examine the most common hospital errors and their root causes.

The Universal Hospital/Medical Errors Errors of Commission: Overt acts that deviate from accepted standards such as:

1. Invasive blunders 2. Traumatic transfers 3. Misapplication of forceps 4. Administering harmful medication or treatment 5. Withholding medication or treatment 6. Physical abuse

Errors of Omission: Failure to provide services resulting in an adverse event:

1. Failure to take a proper history 2. Failure to report changes in clinical condition 3. Failure to maintain safety protocols 4. Failure to provide and maintain pressure ulcer prevention 5. Failure to wash hands between patients 6. Failure to make risk assessments

Risks and Root Causes Risk Factors Predisposing to Medical/Hospital Errors

1. New Technology 2. Staffing Shortage 3. Teaching Hospital 4. High Patient Acuity 5. Patients with Mental Status Deterioration 6. Staff Members in ill health 7. Medical specialization “It’s not my job” 8. Poor listening skills 9. Arrogance

Root Causes

1. Poor Communication 2. Emergency Room Overcrowded with Long Waiting Times 3. Non-Disclosure of Risks to Patients and Family 4. Chronic Cash Flow Deficit 5. Operating Rooms Closed at Night 6. Ineffective Nurse Recruitment 7. Poor Labor Relations 8. Equipment and Building in Disrepair

Find An Experienced Practitioner And A Reputable Botox Clinic Malaysia

As we age, it’s normal for us to suffer wrinkles. Besides, a person who has spent an excessive amount of time in the sun, at tanning salons, or smoking cigarettes might have this skin problem. Generally speaking, the dermis loses both collagen and elastin over time, thus causing skin to become thinner and have difficulty in acquiring abundant moisture to the epidermis. And, the fat in the subcutaneous layer that ensures the skin has a plump appearance also begins to disappear, and the epidermis starts to sag. In the end, wrinkles appear on the body, which makes patients feel old and depressed.

In the botox clinic malaysia, the wrinkles can be removed with a Botox injection treatment. Botox is something derived from a purified protein, which smoothes out lines by preventing the muscles from contracting into a wrinkle. In the procedure, a few drops of Botox are injected with a tiny needle into the muscle to block the nerve impulses that cause the contractions. As the stimulation to the muscle weakens, the lines gradually appear, offering patients a more refreshed, relaxed, highly natural looking appearance.

It just takes only a few minutes to receive this treatment in the botox clinic Malaysia. Typically, the Botox takes effect in nearly five days, while maximum results are achieved in a week. Over three to six months, the effects of the Botox fade and the muscle begins to resume action. When the frown line appears again, a repeat treatment is advocated to maintain the desired result.

In the botox clinic malaysia, the Botox injection treatment can also be used for facial contouring and treating excessive sweating, apart from smoothing out lines. A square jaw, which results from chewing on foods like dried squid and gum or teeth grinding, is considered by most women to be rather severe and masculine. After the Botox injection treatment, the lower face of the patient is beautifully contoured and a slim, feminine jaw is created.

In addition, the Botox injection can cure excessive sweating on some areas of the body such as underarms, hands and feet, which suffered by some patients. As we all know, sweat glands require a nerve impulse to activate. After Botox is injected into problem areas, the related nerve impulse is temporarily relaxed and prevented from reaching the sweat gland, thus stopping sweat production in the treated areas.

In a word, these problems such as wrinkles, excessive sweater can be solved in the botox clinic Malaysia. The qualified doctors there can give you both a quick Botox injection and after-care. So, the botox clinic Malaysia is gaining popularity in the market.

Methadone Clinic

The term “methadone clinic” seems to be an extremely straightforward term. A methadone clinic is a clinic where one gets methadone.
Case closed, right?
Actually, case still open.
Yes, a methadone clinic is a clinic where a person can get methadone. A methadone clinic is a place where individuals who are struggling with opioid addiction can access a medication (methadone) that allows them to get through the day free from either craving or withdrawal symptoms.

But in many cases, a methadone clinic is much more than that. In addition to providing methadone, a methadone clinic may also offer counseling, therapy, job training, legal assistance, education, other forms of medication, and more.

In fact, the term “methadone clinic” itself is being replaced at many facilities, which are promoting the breadth and depth of services offered by branding themselves as medically assisted recovery centers or comprehensive treatment centers.

One of the first reasons to prompt a re-evaluation of the term “methadone clinic” is that many programs now offer a variety of medications to help addicted individuals repress cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Though the staple of the methadone clinic “” methadone “” remains among the most carefully studied and documented medications in the addiction recovery field, recent advancements have led to an array of options.

In addition to methadone, many clinics now offer Suboxone/Subutex, buprenorphine, and Vivitrol. As is the case with methadone, these three drugs serve the dual purpose of repressing drug cravings while also keeping withdrawal symptoms at bay. None of these substances “cure” addiction “” instead, they allow the addicted individual to live a drug-free life while (ideally) getting help for other issues that either led to or were caused by their substance abuse.

The availability of assistance with these other problems is another reason that the term methadone clinic is being phased out in some places. While a methadone clinic sounds like a place to get medication and leave, the term “comprehensive treatment clinic” signals the presence of a range of additional services.

In many former methadone clinics, patients can (or in some cases are required to) attend therapy, participate in counseling sessions, and get help job training, legal problems, professional licensure, family dynamics, and myriad other issues that are related to the drug addiction.

Shifting Hospital Buying Criteria Are Transforming Medical Device Sales Strategies

Working as an executive coach and strategy consultant within the healthcare marketplace provides a unique perspective. Over the past couple of years Ive found myself engaged in projects with global, multi-billion dollar medical device corporations, leading teaching hospitals, information technology leaders, investor-driven start-ups, and regional hospital systems. It has delivered an interesting vantage point to witness the foreshadowing healthcare reform has donned across the landscape. While many of the changes are still yet to come, the impetus of change is already rippling through the sector.

Having the opportunity to see things unfold from both sides of the medical device/hospital, producer/consumer relationship does not go unappreciated. It is a privileged overlook that reveals not only the drivers behind a rapidly changing marketplace, but the initiatives both sides of this symbiotic relationship are scrambling to implement.

Two major shifts are occurring, one leading inevitably to the other. First, hospitals are moving towards evidence-based care. I know this may sound a bit odd and disconcerting to the lay person (i.e. patient) who looks towards medicine and the practice of it as science. Is not science always evidence-based? Well yes, of course it is, in the laboratory or clinical trial. But clinical medicine is delivered through a practice. While we all trust that surgeons and physicians are guided and steeped in the science of medicine, we must also appreciate that once theyre in practice medicine continues to evolve scientifically and technologically.

Medical science does not stand still. The nearly $30 billion in annual, research tax dollars invested by the National Institutes of Health is pushing the envelope forward at an ever-accelerating pace. And this figure doesnt include the private research and development dollars of biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. In fact, it has recently been projected that humankinds scientific knowledge is doubling every five years. How many peer-reviewed, clinical studies can we expect even the finest surgeons and medical practitioners to read every year? Surgeons and physicians do the best they can to keep pace with the state of the science, but traditionally, they practice medicine within a relatively small community of peers, institutions, and colleagues. The practice of clinical medicine, unlike many other technologically-driven industries, has been fragmented. All of the critical-to-quality variables that have been captured, analyzed, and applied in aeronautics, electronics, software, automotive engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing, even the frying of the perfect fast-food french fry have been unattainable in clinical medicine. Until now.

The federal requirements for automating patient records is unleashing a new age in medicine. And patient records are just the beginning. The application of informatics, the ability to capture large, statistically significant pools of clinical data regarding demographics, genetics, presenting conditions, treatments, surgical procedures, peri-operative care, and patient outcomes is driving a seismic shift in how medicine will be practiced in the future. It is probably the last frontier, the last industry to benefit from transposing raw data into cogent information that will dramatically effect quality, costs, and the standardization of processes to optimize both of these factors simultaneously.
